There are a plethora of existing popular and congressional c-amendment proposals aimed at undoing CU. Though laudable, we must ask: do they really go far enough?
The aim of qualifying corporate personhood and distinguishing money from speech are good objectives, this alone will NOT address the roots of our democratic dysfunctions. To fully sequester big money from our political and electoral process requires two further steps: (i) abolish monied lobbying and (ii) mandate full public financing of all elections, for an orderly, open, neutral, and publicly financed system of candidacy and campaigning.
Such an expanded amendment would legally sequester money from politics for keeps, creating a system that privileges your everyday citizen. This amendment, taken with other initiatives - for example, a media market regulatory regime designed to liberalize and diversify the market - would likely cure the more egregious dysfunctions in our democracy.
